THE IMPORTANCE OF DESULPHURISATION
Flue gas is emitted from a pipe or channel conveying exhaust gases and toxic fumes from a fireplace, oven, boiler, steam generator or furnace.
Fossil fuels combusted from such systems, tend to have significant amounts of sulphur, which when burnt release oxidised sulphur compounds, that cause dangerous hazardous environmental elements such as sulphuric acid mist and acidic rain.
As such, desulphurisation of both industrial and domestic emissions, is of crucial importance, to reduce the release harmful forms of sulphur compounds into the environment.
ECOLOGICAL & ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF ACIDIC RAIN
When sulphur acidifies rain, marine and plant life suffer severe consequences of an ever decreasing pH in their natural environments: Sensitive plant species die, fish eggs do not hatch and some insects die. These changes in pH create an imbalance in the ecosystem, that can become irreversible, through the extinction of certain species, if left unchecked.
Besides the ecological impact, acidic rain negatively affect the economic health of a nation, through the extra costs incurred in regular maintenance of infrastructure damaged by rain with such highly corrosive elements.
The industrialisation of nations should take these aspects into dire consideration, and reform their energy generation processes, in order to mitigate environmental damage and be able to advance technologically, without ecological degradation.
OUR REMEDY
One of the key aspects to increasing the energy yield from a fuel and lowering toxic emissions, lies in the efficient removal of sulphur. The reason being, that the more sulphur crude oil contains, the less energy it produces per litre, barrel or gallon. It goes without saying, that sulphur contamination comes at a consequence of higher CO2 emissions, when more fuel is required perform designated functions.
The key to effectively lowering emissions and operating economically, is to utilise high surface area nanocatalysts, that efficiently support the upgrade of waste oil into fuels that deliver more energy, at lower volumetric quantities.
NANOARC offers high performance atomically-architectured quantum materials, functioning as efficient high surface area catalysts at low volumes, for an enhanced capture of sulphur, from flue gas and fuel reforming processes. The material byproducts generated through the sulphur capture process are then converted into safer forms, to be used as essential non-toxic components in other technological sectors.
Conventional commercial catalyst beds used for desulphurisation perform approximately at 16 - 34g of sulphur capture, for every 100g of catalyst. Typical surface area for these micron-sized catalyst particles is about 6000 m²/kg. Our atomically-architectured quantum materials are capable of extracting higher levels of sulphur, with just 1 gram (0.035 oz.) of nanocatalyst. Under such a configuration, more extensive breakthrough times are achieved, less operation downtime is required and higher purity fuels with increased energy density and significantly lower toxic emissions are attainable.
