BOREHOLE

CEMENT  REINFORCEMENT

Most wells producing oil and gas eventually succumb to water ingress, which leads to the end of the productive life of the well.

Excessive water production results in high operating expenses, early shut-in and, eventually, well abandonment when the economic viability for production is breeched. Furthermore, the hydrocarbon-producing capability of a well can be diminished if hydrostatic pressures exceed those of the hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs. In addition to increased lifting and disposal costs, operators can spend a significant amount on preventing scale build up or effects of corrosion caused by water production.

It goes without saying, that in order to minimise the environmental impact of well drilling whilst maintaining reasonable yield levels, a significant reduction in water production and/or achieving water shut off can reduce artificial lift requirements, decrease operation costs, extend field life and increase ultimate oil recovery of a reservoir.

OIL WELL CEMENT ISSUES

Cementing the casing is a critical part of well construction; cement is used to seal the space between the well casing and the drill hole in order to hold the casing in place, stabilise the well, and prevent oil and gas from leaking into the surrounding groundwater.

The cement used for this process, needs to be robust enough to withstand the mechanical and chemical agents of degradation it is exposed to, within an oil well. This will require the following:

Oil-well cements used for cementing work in the drilling of oil wells are subject to high temperatures and pressures. By virtue of their grain size and chemical properties, conventional cements and pozzolanic materials can not acchieve this on their own.

OVERCOMING CONTEMPORARY PORTLAND & POZZOLAN CEMENT LIMITATIONS:

The strength developed by portland cement depends on its composition and the fineness to which it is ground. To achieve this, contemporary cement systems use a cement grinding process, to increase the specific area of the cement powder. So to say, the total particle surface area of a unit mass of cement is increased, in order to achieve fine particles with typical specific surface area (the total particle surface area of a unit mass of cement) values of 320–380 m2·kg−1 for general purpose cements, and 450–650 m2·kg−1 for 'rapid hardening' cements. An increase in specific surface area of cementitious powder, increases the performance and setting rate of the system.

However, during well construction portland or pozzolanic cement with special organic retarders is used to prevent the cement from setting too quickly. This means ultrafine, high surface area, rapid drying cements may not be the most suitable materials for oil well construction.

Hence, additional measures are nonetheless necessary, to ensure higher cement strength and reduced porosity for better oil well durability and enhanced cement bond log (CBL) for a more extensive service lifetime and performance beyond that provided by contemporary class H cements.

QUANTCRETE - NANOTECHNOLOGICAL ENHANCEMENT OF CBL

CBL is effected by the compressive strength of the cement with higher compressive strengths giving higher attenuation and larger percentage of bonded pipe giving higher attenuation.

Nanotechnology takes construction material performance to the next level, beyond contemporary capabilities of cement and concrete systems. NANOARC Offers QuantCreteTM nanoadditives, which are sustainably developed, eco-friendly ultrahigh blaine, high-performance nanomaterials known as Quantum Materials.

Depending on the dosage used, QuantCrete nanoadditives offer the following benefits :

The key aspect of cement performance starts with its porosity. To reduce porosity, materials with very high blaine (specific surface area) or superfine grain size are necessary. The higher the blaine, the higher the ability of the material to reduce porosity. The table shows how QuantCrete ranks with conventional cements and pozzolans.

QUANTCRETETM ATOM

APPLICATIONS

RAPID EARLY STAGE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH: It serves as a concrete rapid hardening solution, enabling a fast setting of concrete with less cement, thus helping lower the carbon footprint while simultaneously saving valuable hours and reducing construction duration time.

ATOMIC-SCALE CONCRETE REPAIR & REINFORCEMENT: With an ultra-high blaine of 1,486,400 cm²/g and particle dimensions of ~ 1.4nm (0.001 μm), it is capable of surgically penetrating deep level cracks and fractured sites within concrete, more than any material prior. At a quantum particle size of 1.4 nm, it is close to the size domain of atoms the size of a hydrogen atom (0.11 nm).

CORROSION PREVENTION: With strong corrosion resistance, good chemical and thermal stability and a pH of ~ 11.7, it and a size closer to the atomic scale, it provides a more surgical interaction with corrosive agents like chlorine ions (~ 0.167 nm), water molecules (0.275 nm) and sulphate ions (0.242 nm) to prohibit chemical damage in concrete.

EARLY-AGE CEMENT HYDRATION & DENSIFIER: Once in contact with water, in a concrete mix, it increases the heat of hydration of Portland cement, yielding rapid and high early stage compressive strength gain while simultaneously acting as a cement nucleation site to densify concrete, reducing porosity and the probability of crack formation. This enables the production of lighter precast concrete with higher strength and better durability. The increased heat of hydration benefits construction in extremely cold areas (e.g Antartica, Alaska and far nordic regions) and in warmer environments, less portland cement usage is possible. It is beneficial for systems like of ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS or GGBFS) where is acts as an early activator to enhance concrete strength gain.

ANTI-STATIC SURFACES: It serves as an anti-static agent, useful in applications requiring low electrostatic charge and dissipative surface.

QUANTCRETETM C-SET

APPLICATIONS

I. CO2 CAPTURE : The pH of concrete has to stay above 11, for it to remain stable. Carbonation, or CO2 capture in concrete, reduces its pH to ~ 8.3, damaging both rebar & concrete.

QUANTCRETE C-SET efficiently captures CO2 & neutralises the damage from carbonation. It is a cement nanoadditive, designed to also counteract and neutralise the acidity caused by concrete carbonation. After CO2 capture, its pH value drops to 11.3, which is still within the safe operation range for concrete.

II. SLAG/HIGH ALUMINA CEMENT (HAC/CAC) & FLY ASH ACCELERATOR : HAC is prone to a crystalline re-arrangement (or ‘conversion’), which results in reduced strength and vulnerability to chemical attack and structural failure, when exposed to water for long periods of time.

QUANTCRETE C-SET is recommended for use in cementitious systems based on calcium aluminate cements (CAC) where it accelerates the setting time.  This favours a higher usage of fly ash and GGBS-based formulations for an added reduction in carbon footprint, alongside the innate ability of QUANTCRETE C-HOLD SET to capture CO2, without compromising concrete durability.

III. RESISTANCE TO ALKALI REACTIVITY (ASR) & SULPHATE ATTACK (TSA) IN CONCRETE & MORTAR: QUANTCRETE C-SET improves cement paste and concrete workability, increases compressive strength and provides resistance to sulphate attack while also reducing the expansion associated with alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in Portland cement formulations.
